Camouflaging Bomb Shelter: Design Ideas and Wallpapers

Blog Images

In Singapore, bomb shelters — often called Home Shelters (HS) — are mandated by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and overseen by the SCDF. Every HDB flat built after 1998 includes one. These rooms are structurally reinforced to protect occupants during emergencies and come with strict design and renovation rules. They’re often located near the entrance of the flat, making them a visible and practical space to style thoughtfully.

In this guide, we explore various design ideas and wallpaper options that can effectively camouflage bomb shelters while adhering to Singapore's laws and regulations.

Restrictions on Drilling, Flooring, and Wall Finishes

Modifying a bomb shelter comes with clear rules to maintain its structural safety. Here's what you need to know:

  • No drilling or hacking: Walls must remain intact to preserve the shelter’s structural integrity.

  • Flooring overlays: Permitted only if the total thickness is ≤ 50mm.

  • Wall finishes: Paint and wallpaper are allowed, but must be non-permanent and easily removable.

  • No permanent fixtures: Built-ins must be freestanding or detachable without damaging walls or floors.

  • No rewiring or trunking: Electrical modifications that involve drilling into the shelter walls are prohibited.

These restrictions ensure the shelter is always functional and ready for emergencies.

How to Camouflage or Style Your Bomb Shelter Within Design Limitations

Integrating a bomb shelter into your home’s design without breaching HDB or SCDF rules is both a creative challenge and an opportunity. The goal is to preserve the shelter’s protective function while ensuring it complements your overall interior aesthetic. From clever concealment to functional enhancements, these ideas offer ways to style your bomb shelter safely.

Build Around the Bomb Shelter Door

Construct a structure or feature that makes the bomb shelter door less conspicuous. This could be a recessed panel, full-height cabinet, or wall cladding detail that mirrors surrounding elements. The design should not obstruct the door’s access or compromise its functionality but instead allow it to blend with the rest of the wall.

Use a Traditional Trapdoor-Style Bookshelf

A bookshelf that swings open or slides aside to reveal the bomb shelter can turn a practical need into a design feature. This solution not only camouflages the entrance but also adds storage and visual interest. Just ensure the shelf remains freestanding or easily removable, as per HDB regulations.

Make It Part of Your Interior Design Style

Rather than hiding the shelter, incorporate it intentionally into your design scheme. Paint it in your accent colour, or add trims and textures that match your theme — whether minimalist, industrial, or eclectic. When styled well, the shelter can become a unique feature that adds depth to your space.

Use Wallpaper to Disguise the Bomb Shelter

Wallpaper is a stylish and removable way to disguise the bomb shelter door. Choose a continuous pattern that runs across the surrounding wall and the door, visually blending them together. Self-adhesive, VOC-free wallpaper ensures you stay compliant with SCDF guidelines while enhancing your room’s cohesion.

One of our clients used the Hand-Drawn Herringbone, Pattern Wallpaper to great effect, creating a seamless, unified look that made the bomb shelter door almost invisible within the space. The subtle pattern added texture without drawing unnecessary attention — a smart, stylish solution.

What Are the Popular Styles for Bomb Shelter Feature Wall Design?

Now that we’ve explored clever ways to blend your bomb shelter into your home, let’s look at the popular wallpaper styles that can elevate the space — both functionally and aesthetically.

Modern Industrial

The modern industrial style is a natural fit for bomb shelters in Singapore, especially those with exposed concrete or structural elements. Rather than hiding the utilitarian look, this style embraces it — think textured finishes, metal accents, and raw materials. Pairing this aesthetic with smart lighting and streamlined furnishings turns an otherwise stark space into a stylish urban nook.

Ombre Washes

Ombre wallpapers offer a subtle yet impactful way to add depth and dimension to your bomb shelter. These gradient designs shift gently from one tone to another — from deep navy to sky blue, or blush pink to warm neutrals — creating a soothing visual flow. In smaller, enclosed spaces like shelters, ombre patterns can make walls feel taller or more expansive, helping counter the room’s compact nature. It's a modern, elegant choice that adds softness without clutter.

Geometric Patterns

Geometric wallpaper is a bold yet versatile way to add visual interest to bomb shelters. Whether it’s soft arches, clean lines or tessellated shapes, geometric patterns can energise a small space without overwhelming it. In Singapore’s compact HDB layouts, this style helps define the bomb shelter as a design feature while maintaining harmony with the rest of the home. Opt for soothing neutrals or pastel tones to keep the look modern and refined.

Tropical or Nature-Inspired

Given Singapore’s lush climate, it’s no surprise that tropical and nature-inspired designs are popular choices for bomb shelters. Introducing botanical prints, leafy murals, or calming green tones can offset the enclosed nature of the room. These organic elements evoke openness and a sense of airiness, making the shelter feel less like a bunker and more like a cosy garden retreat.

Minimalist Neutrals

When space is tight — as it often is in Singapore’s HDB flats — minimalist neutrals work wonders. Soft beige, warm grey, or creamy whites help open up the bomb shelter visually. This style supports multifunctional use too: whether it’s a study, meditation room or pantry, a clean and neutral palette creates a calming and versatile foundation.

Japandi or Scandinavian

Both Japandi and Scandinavian styles are known for their serene simplicity, making them ideal for reimagining bomb shelters. Light wood textures, natural fabrics and muted tones bring a sense of balance and harmony. These styles are also highly functional — a perfect fit for a space that benefits from clever storage and thoughtful design.
